COFFEE. SIP. REFLECT. WRITE.

Whatever comes to mind when sipping coffee

I have stories to tell.

Stories of my childhood and old age. Stories of my struggles and victories, of embarrassments and how I trounced them.

I have stories to tell of my love for my family, for traveling, for my wrinkles and baldness.

I have stories of my love for God.

Some stories are funny. Some are not. But I guarantee there are some lessons to learn from all these. Ok, I take that back. There’s really no guarantee. Maybe a faint smile. You tell me.

But first, I wrote something with a pen -the story of my write.

Grab your cup and read it below.

Happy reading!

The Story of My Write

I love coffee. I am an Electrical Engineer by profession and lighting design is my main craft. I’ve been at this since the invention of the incandescent bulb. Yep, that long! ago! already! I am old already. Practically a fossil.

Now, when it comes to writing, I am new. On and off -like a lightbulb flickering when it’s about to get busted. And being true to my craft, I write light, too. I mean no heavy reading stuff in this book.

This all started rather unwittingly -over a cup of coffee, to be specific.

My son, André, jumped in to the coffee bandwagon a few years back. Then in late 2020, he broke his piggy bank, stole coins from my pocket and went on a shopping spree for an espresso machine, a grinder and a container of bits and pieces of this and that related to coffee-making.

After many, many missed shots, he pulled one latte art that, to me, looked like a tornado. Picture a whirlwind of milk and espresso wreaking havoc in a coffee cup. Yup, that! I snapped a pic with my phone.

As a proud father of a new barista, I shared that pic with family chat groups, wrote a short reflection about it and called it #mycoffeecupreflections:

“A tornado is a sight to behold from a distance. The conical shape that changes its bend and its size as it spins so elegantly and smoothly makes you want to get closer. But it’s a trap. The attraction will suddenly turn into a ruination the moment it gets you within its spinning radius. This day, do not be deceived by a wolf in sheep’s clothing, lest it attacks you. May wisdom be yours. Have a nice day.”

The following day, a new design came out of my coffee cup. I did the same. And the next. And the next 100+ days. The reflections were getting longer -from three or four sentences to three or four paragraphs.

It was about a week later after that tornado cup that I started posting on IG and FB and much later, started a blog site. Follow the hashtag #mycoffeecupreflections to catch up on more coffee-induced stories.

This blog is a compilation of the first 3 years of coffee cup reflections, a journey that commenced in late 2020. As you flip through these pages, you’ll notice they are not meticulously arranged by the dates on which the stories took place. They follow the sequence of my time-warped brain, all over the place.

So, if you stumble upon a reflection from 2022 nestled between thoughts from 2020, just nod knowingly and blame it on the cup you are holding.

May these reflections serve as companions on your own journey, like a cup of warm espresso, and, perhaps, maybe even inspire a moment of connection between the shared narratives of our lives.

And that’s a scary thought!

You’ve been warned.

Read on and enjoy the ride! ☕ ✍
